The honest range, what actually drives it, and why we look before we quote.
Most grout repair jobs run somewhere between $500 and $4,000. That's a wide range, and if you've called around getting quotes, you've probably heard tighter numbers than that — a flat rate per square foot, given over the phone before anyone's seen the job. We don't do that, and the reason is really just that the wide range is the honest answer.
Describe "some dark grout in the shower" over the phone and you could be describing two completely different jobs. One is grout that's dirty and worn but structurally fine — clean it properly, reseal it, done in an afternoon. The other is grout that's crumbling or cracked, maybe with a tile or two that needs to come up, maybe with something going on underneath that only shows once work starts.
Square footage matters less here than most people expect. A small shower with badly failed grout can end up costing more than a large kitchen floor that just needs a deep clean and a seal. Size is easy to quote over the phone. Condition isn't, and condition is what actually sets the price.
Condition of the existing grout. This is the big one. Clean-and-reseal jobs and full regrout jobs aren't the same category of work, and the price reflects that.
Whether any tile needs to come up. Sometimes a cracked or loose tile is part of the picture. Sometimes it isn't, and the grout was doing all the damage on its own.
Access and prep. How much has to move out of the way, how tight the space is to work in, how much masking and protection the rest of the room needs. A shower with a glass door and tile floor right outside it takes more care than an open one.
None of these show up clearly in a phone call. They show up when someone's actually looking at the tile.
A number given without seeing the job first is either a guess or a low anchor meant to get a foot in the door, and it gets revised once someone's standing in the bathroom. Neither of those is a real quote — it's a number that sounds acceptable, hoping the actual job matches it closely enough that nobody notices the difference.
A real quote takes a look in person. It doesn't cost anything and it doesn't take long. What it buys is a number that actually holds once the work starts, instead of one that quietly grows.
Here's the thing most people don't expect to hear: a lot of the showers we look at don't need regrouting at all. They need the existing grout cleaned properly and sealed — a smaller job, a smaller number, and it gets the same result for a lot less. We'll tell you which one you've got before quoting anything, not after.
That's worth saying plainly, because most people brace for the expensive answer. A lot of the time, the honest answer is the cheaper one.
If a rough number is genuinely useful before deciding whether to call anyone, $500–$4,000 is the real range for tile and grout work — clean-and-seal jobs at the low end, full regrouts or jobs involving tile replacement toward the higher end. Where a specific job falls inside that range depends on the three things above, not on square footage alone.
